New driving licensing requirements

State enterprise Regitra would like to remind the drivers about new driving licensing requirements applied to nationals of third countries to come into force on the 19th of January 2013.

Nationals of third countries having their driving licences issued in third countries replaced with Lithuanian licences from the 19th of January 2013 will be subject to the requirement to pass a practical examination.  A valid driver's medical examination certificate and medical knowledge certificate will have to be presented to Regitra.  The requirement to complete training organised by driving schools in Lithuania will not apply in this case.

Both theory and practical tests can be taken in any Regitra examination centre, irrespective of person's place of residence, by nationals not speaking the state language. They can use theory test computer program developed by Regitra, which offers the options of taking an examination in Lithuanian, English or Russian, while practical driving test can be taken by the use of interpreter‘s services.

Nationals of third countries who came to Lithuania to study or work and have resided in the country for over half a year are eligible for replacement of their driving licences.

According to Regitra, a few hundreds of driving licences issued in third countries are replaced with Lithuanian national driving licences every year.

For example, in 2012 the number of replaced licences was 253, most of which - 69 – were originally issued in Russia, 43 in Belarus, 40 in the USA, 31 in the Ukraine, and 10 in Kazakhstan.

At least one certificate issued in each of the following countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Columbia, Iran, Jordan, Japan, Syria was replaced.
