The number of motor cars registered in Lithuania peaks

Summarised motor vehicles registration results of the first quarter of this year performed by the State Enterprise Regitra show that the quantity of used motor cars (class M1) imported to Lithuania and temporarily registered during this year reached its peak and amounted to 27 275. This quantity by 129.8% exceeds the relevant quantity of the same period of 2010 and is almost thrice as large as in the first quarter 2009.

Users of motor cars intending to use the cars for a short period until they are sold or finally registered or leave the territory of Lithuania use the system of temporary registration. Limited validity (provisional) state number plates issued in Lithuania are valid for maximum 90 days.

In terms of quantities of motor cars destined for exportation and registered in Lithuania by foreign nationals this year the residents of Belarus occupy the first place – they account for 22% (5 953), immediately followed by the Poles and Latvians whose share among all temporarily registered motor cars accounted for 2% per each (649 and 485 motor cars respectively).

Compared with the first quarter of 2010 this year the quantity of motor cars temporarily registered by Byelorussians quadrupled.

This year quantitative growth is observed both for used motor cars registered temporarily and for motor cars registered for unlimited period. During the first quarter of this year used motor cars imported to Lithuania and registered for unlimited period totalled 22 335 or by 34.5% exceeded the comparable figure of the same period of 2010.

New motor cars accounted for 5% (2 707 units) of all motor cars registered in Lithuania for the first time this year.

This year due to announced search for motor cars or suspected fraud of motor car particulars registration was refused for 54 motor cars, mostly of “Volkswagen” and BMW makes (13 and 12 respectively). Compared with the first quarter of 2010 recorded number of such cases has grown by 54.3%.

Registration of a motor car by the State Enterprise Regitra provides administrative permission for a motor car to participate in the public transport.
