Expected changes in granting the right to drive motorcycles and tricycles

StateEnterprise Regitra points out that as of 19 January 2013, as of effect of the amendments to the Law on Safe Traffic on Roads of the Republic of Lithuania, the residents will be able to acquire the right to drive the vehicles of new category A2 as well as such other news relevant to the acquisition of the right to drive motorcycles and tricycles will come into effect as of the above date.

New category A2
The motorcycles not exceeding 35 kW of the power-to-weight ratio not exceeding 0.2 kW/kg, which are not derived from twice as powerful vehicle, will be eligible for a new category A2. Minimum age, eligible for the right to drive the vehicles of such category, is 18 years.
Where passing the driving test in this category, Regitra shall be furnished with the identity document, document substantiating the completion of training course, valid medical ward certificate, certificate of health knowledge, as well as valid driver’s license (if such has been previously issued).

Persons without any experience in driving motorcycles will be granted the right to drive powerful motorcycles later
As of 19 January 2013 the persons, who do not have two years of experience in driving motorcycles, will be granted the right to drive powerful motorcycles only after reaching the age of 24 and not 21, as it is today. The persons, wishing to acquire this right, will have to pass theoretical and practical examinations.
The persons, who have two years of experience in driving motorcycles, will be granted the right to drive powerful motorcycles, if they have reached the age of 20 and have passed practical examination. The requirement to pass the practical examination was set in accordance with the Directive 2006/126/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 December 2006 on driving licenses.
The company points out that currently the persons, having two years of experience of driving the motorcycles with power limitation, have the right to change the available driver’s license to the license, granting the right to drive powerful motorcycles without passing the practical examination. The requirement to pass the practical examination will come into effect as of 19 January 2013.

The right to drive tricycles
In accordance with currently applicable provisions of the Law onSafe Traffic on Roads of the Republic of Lithuania, in order to drive tricycles, a person shall have the driver’s license of category B1 or B.
As of effect of the amendments to the law on 19 January 2013, in order to drive tricycles not exceeding 15 kW, a person shall have the driver’s license of category A1, and the right to drive such tricycles will be granted from 16 years of age.
In order to drive tricycles exceeding 15 kW, a person shall have the driver’s license of category A, and the right to drive such tricycles will be granted from 21 years of age.
It is established in the Law on Safe Traffic of Road, that a tricycle is a three-wheeled vehicle with symmetrically arranged wheels and working capacity of the internal combustion engine exceeding 50 cm3 and (or) maximum design speed over 45 km/h.
