New law sets longer periods

State Enterprise Regitra (hereinafter referred to as „Regitra“) has announced that the law amending Article 27 of the Law on Road Traffic Safety No VIII-2043 of the Republic of Lithuania (hereinafter referred to as „Law“), which regulates the use of road vehicles, came into force on 14 November 2014.
The law provides for a longer period of 180 days (compared with 90 days established by the former law) for the elimination of reasons for which a vehicle was not allowed to participate in public traffic.
The new law also provides for a longer period of three years (compared with one year established by the former law) for which the owner of a vehicle may terminate the motor vehicle’s permission to participate in public traffic. This period can be extended by one year.
Under the new law the owner of a deregistered vehicle is not obliged to return the number plates to Regitra. The number plates will be declared invalid and the owner will be held responsible for the legitimacy of their use.
