What is the SDK, and when and how it can be obtained?

The SDK is a unique vehicle owner declaration code consisting of 8 letters. The code is required to be possessed for all vehicles present in the country, which are owned by Lithuanian residents or companies. The new code is also generated each time the owner of the vehicle changes. It is important to know that from May the SDK is required to be possessed not only in order to register but also to sell a vehicle.

From 1 May, the SDK was automatically assigned to some vehicle owners, while other owners have to apply to "Regitra" for the code. Vehicle owners can report of the vehicle owned and obtain the SDK in the electronic system.

Information on how the SDK is assigned for the first time is given below according to specific situations.

  • For vehicles currently registered in Lithuania

On 1 May 2021, all vehicles, which are currently registered in Lithuania (except for those that are temporary registered and those that are exported), are automatically assigned with the SDK. Thus, no further action is required to be done by their owners.

The SDK, that has been assigned, can be found out online or at "Regitra" branch.

  • For deregistered vehicles

If the vehicle is currently deregistered, then a transitional period until 31 July 2021 is provided for obtaining the SDK. In other words, the owner of the vehicle must apply to "Regitra" within 3 months and report of the vehicle he owns and obtain the SDK. This can be done online (if the person uses the electronic services or other e-identification tool of either bank located in Lithuania) or at "Regitra" branch.

IMPORTANT. From 1 May 2021, only vehicles which have already been assigned the SDK can be sold and registered. In this case, the SDK has to be obtained before performing these actions without waiting until 31 July.

  • For vehicles which are present in Lithuania but not yet registered here

If a vehicle is already in the territory of Lithuania, but it is not yet registered here, in this case, a transitional period until 31 July 2021 is provided for obtaining the SDK.

  • For imported vehicles

If a vehicle was purchased abroad and will be imported to Lithuania, before the vehicle is imported to the territory of the country, its owner must apply to "Regitra" and report of the vehicle that he has and obtain the SDK. This can be done online (if the person uses the electronic services or other e-identification tool of either bank located in Lithuania) or at "Regitra" branch.

  • For newly manufactured or self-made vehicles that have not yet been registered in Lithuania

If a new or self-made vehicle is in the territory of Lithuania, but it has not yet been registered here, in this case, a transitional period until 31 July 2021 is provided for obtaining the SDK.
