New prerequisites for registering vehicles

Once the Law of the Republic of Lithuania on Road Traffic Safety (hereinafter – the law) comes into effect on 1 July 2014, new prerequisites for registering vehicles will be applicable at State Enterprise Regitra (hereinafter – Regitra).

Regitra will only register vehicles which have a valid mandatory technical inspection sticker, and whose legal possessor has insured the vehicle with mandatory third party liability insurance and carried out compulsory customs procedures.

In addition, all used vehicles being imported from third countries (and in some cases – from EU countries as well) and registered in Lithuania for the first time will only be registered once examination of the vehicle is carried out at a technical inspection company, or once confirmation of the type of vehicle is obtained at the State Road Transport Inspectorate.

Most of the companies that carry out mandatory technical inspection and/or vehicle examinations are located near Regitra branch offices (e.g. UAB Tuvlita in Vilnius, UAB Kauno techninės apžiūros centras in Kaunas, UAB Transkona in Klaipėda, and UAB Panevėžio techninės apžiūros centras in Panevėžys).

Regitra will electronically receive information about whether the vehicle complies with said legal requirements from the Customs System of the Republic of Lithuania, the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of the Republic of Lithuania, the Transeksta Lithuanian Technical Inspection Association, and other competent authorities.

Vehicles that are not registered in Lithuania can be driven to the mandatory technical inspection or vehicle examination location using valid temporary number plates issued in the country of origin, or trade number plates issued in accordance with the established procedure.
