Vehicle possessors will also be able to suspend registration

With the recent increase in public discussion about the possible introduction of motor vehicle tax, Regitra has been receiving more frequent enquiries about whether changes in motor vehicle registration procedures are foreseen this year.
Regitra would like to remind you that new provisions to the Law “On Safe Traffic on Roads” will come into force on 1 July 2014, according to which automatic cancellation of vehicle registration in the Register of Road Vehicles will be legalised, as well as the option for legal possessors of vehicles to suspend registration thereof on their own accord.

Permission to participate in traffic is suspended first

Permission to take part in traffic for vehicles which do not comply with legal requirements will first be denied. This restriction will be applied if mandatory technical inspection is not carried out, or if the vehicle is involved in an accident and validity of its inspection certificate is thereby cancelled.
Permission to take part in traffic will also be suspended if mandatory civil liability insurance has not been obtained for the vehicle or if state taxes related to motor vehicles or the participation thereof in public traffic have not been paid.

Automatic cancellation of registration – in 90 days

The law requires that the reasons for which permission to participate in traffic was suspended must be eliminated within 90 days. If said reasons are not eliminated within this period, permission to participate in traffic will be revoked and the vehicle’s registration will be cancelled. The vehicle’s state number plates will be recognised as invalid and must be returned to Regitra.
Vehicle registration will be cancelled based on data obtained from competent authorities: the Transeksta Association, which unites joint-stock companies carrying out mandatory technical inspection, the Motor Insurers’ Bureau and other institutions.

Vehicle possessors will also be able to suspend registration

If a motor vehicle is not used for a considerable period of time (e.g.  mopeds or motorcycles that are not used in winter), the legal possessor will be able to suspend registration on his own accord.
The law allows for registration to be suspended for up to one year. As of 1 July 2014, it will be possible to suspend registration at Regitra branches or online, by logging in to Regitra’s e-service portal.
